Floor to Finish: A Complete Guide to AVC's Ford Transit Flooring Systems

Hey everybody, Matt here for AVC and welcome back to the shop!

The floor is the foundation of your entire van build. A great floor system provides insulation, noise reduction, and a solid, versatile base for everything you plan to put inside. Over the years, we've refined our offerings to give DIYers the best possible choices for their camper van floor.

We’ve improved quality, added new products, and created more flexible purchasing options—like selling our Step & Trim a la carte so you don't have to buy a full kit if you only need one piece. Plus, all our subfloor systems now include the option for pre-cut, recessed L-Track at versatile locations (11.5 inches from the back door and 55.5 inches from there, spaced 44 inches apart).

Here is a concise overview of every floor product AVC offers, from templates to finished trim:

1. Templates & Insulation-Only Options

If you want the lowest-cost option or want to source your own wood, these products give you the perfect starting point.

Paper Pattern Floor System 📜

This is a full-size paper template of the van's floor.

  • Pro: Lowest cost, quick shipping (no freight), and maximum material freedom.

  • Use: Lay it on your chosen subfloor material (e.g., 4ft X 8ft plywood sheets), trace it out, and cut.

  • Features: Includes guides for preferred L-Track locations and easy-to-manage cut lines for seamless 4x8 sheet layout.

Insulation Only Floor System 🧱

This product provides the insulation layer from under our premium kits, shipped in a standard box (cheaper, no freight).

  • Material: Foam insulation, pre-cut into easy-to-handle, numbered sections (12 for 148” body, 15 for extended).

  • Pro: Provides the advanced insulation technology and underfloor wire runs without the wood layer.

  • Use: Glue these sections directly to the van floor (adhesive not included). You can then use the foam pieces themselves as a full-size template to trace and cut your own wood subfloor layer.

2. Complete Drop-In Subfloor Systems

These ready-to-go kits include the subfloor and improved features for seamless DIY installation. Both systems now use 3M 550 Adhesive (one tube per panel included) for installation, which provides more working time than spray adhesive, allowing you to reposition panels before the glue kicks.

Insulated Subfloor System (The Warmest Floor) 🌡️

  • Build: 1-inch polyisocyanurate foam bonded to 1/2-inch Baltic birch (manufactured in-house for quality control).

  • Best For: Cold climates, maximum noise reduction, and the warmest possible floor. The full coverage and bonded construction absorb a significant amount of road noise.

  • New Improvements:

    • Overlapping Joints: Panels now feature an overlapping seam where the front and rear panels sit on top of the middle panel, which can be glued and temporarily screwed for a perfectly flat, durable seam.

    • Improved Cutouts: Designed using Ford CAD models for a more detailed fit against the van's contours.

    • Wire Races: Built-in underfloor channels for running wires (like for an Espar or main power) side-to-side.

Synthetic Floor System (The Waterproof Floor) 💧

  • Build: 3/4-inch panel made from polyurethane foam with a fiberglass chop fill and fiberglass stringer.

  • Best For: Very wet climates, heavy cargo, or work vehicles. It's incredibly rigid, dense, and 100% waterproof.

  • Features:

    • Sits 1/4-inch lower than the insulated subfloor, sitting on top of the van’s floor ribs, which allows for airflow underneath.

    • New Overlapping Joints: Updated overlapping/locking joints replace the older "bow-tie" connections for an easier, more secure install.

  • Safety Note: Because this material contains fiberglass, you must wear gloves when handling it and use a respirator when cutting or sanding outdoors.

3. Finishing Layers: Pre-Cut Flooring

We partnered with Camper Van HQ to offer durable, pre-cut flooring options that are drop-in ready for your AVC subfloor.

The AVC "Tubbing" Feature

Unlike other systems, our floors are cut with tubbing, meaning the material rolls up slightly along the sides of the van. This unique feature:

  • Creates a cleaner look by hiding the air gap between the wall and the floor.

  • Prevents moisture, snow melt, or spills from rolling down the sides of your subfloor.

Lonseal (Vinyl)

  • Look: Available in many options, including the classic coin look, pebble look, and wood-look styles.

  • Cleaning: Easiest to clean; dirt sits on top for simple sweeping.

2tec2 (Industrial Woven Carpet)

  • Look: Offers a premium, woven carpet feel.

  • Cleaning: Traps dirt in the weave, requiring vacuuming (a small shop vac is recommended). It's still 100% plastic and waterproof.

4. The Details: Step & Trim, L-Track, & Accessories

These finishing pieces complete the look, provide safety, and add utility.

Step & Trim (Available A La Carte)

We've made several improvements to our trim pieces to ensure better fit and future compatibility:

Piece Key Improvements
Z-Trim (Sliding Door) Trimmed back to prevent wedging against the bulb seal and to allow easier future bug screen installation.
Entry Step (Driver/Passenger Door) Lowered the right-hand trim for better subfloor clearance. Added pre-drilled mounting options for self-tapping screws or alignment with Ford factory mounting points. Also includes L-Track fittings for securing a dog leash or cargo.
Front Trim (Behind Seats) Slightly shortened to line up with the synthetic floor system. Includes relief cuts for routing wiring (Espar, CCP) without crushing.
Rear Trim (Back Doors) A radius trim piece that provides tall, durable coverage for the rear entry, regardless of your subfloor choice (this is a very popular a la carte item).
Grip Tape Two pieces of pre-cut grip tape are included with the Entry Step for added texture and safety (and a spare in case you need a refresh).

Recessed L-Track System 🧲

The L-Track kits are CNC-milled here in the USA by our partners at Stayrede Adventure Gear, specifically for the Transit.

  • Features: The bolt hole locations are designed to miss all the complicated factory framing underneath the van.

  • Use: Provides a versatile, flush mounting point for cargo, bike mounts, or slide-out trays.

  • Kit: Comes with all necessary hardware and beautiful, machined aluminum end caps that encapsulate your subfloor edge for a perfectly finished, crisp look.
