They give your walls and ceiling a flat, uniform surface to meet on, so the seam stays straight instead of rippling.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey are also useful for spacing off the walls to avoid any wiring you don't want your walls or ceiling rubbing up on.
